BDL is invited to host the power hour at Gordon Research Conference in 2025!

2025 Physics and Chemistry of Microfluidics Gordon Research Conference will be held in Lucca, Italy. The conference chairs are Katherine Elvira (UVictoria) and Polly Fordice (Stanford). 

The GRC Power Hour has garnered widespread popularity among both men and women, highlighting the increasing dialogue in the sciences about topics such as unconscious bias, mentoring and sponsorship, strategies for addressing harassment and inappropriate behavior, and the necessary cultural changes to support the professional development of all scientists throughout their careers. As organizers, our role will be to facilitate these discussions and plan areas of focus that are most relevant to the Physics and Chemistry of Microfluidics community.

BDL receives NWO Summit grant

The SUMMIT grant recognizes world-class collaborations, while further strengthening these partnerships. The DRIVE-RM collaboration involves UMC Utrecht, Utrecht University, Eindhoven University of Technology, Maastricht University, and the Hubrecht Institute, focusing on smart materials that assist the body in healing.

Looking forward to working with this great team in the next 10 years!

Burcu joins the advisory board of the Royal Society of Chemistry - Lab on a Chip Journal

We are excited to contribute to the further development of this pioneering journal in the microfluidics field.

We got an NWO XS grant awarded!

With this funded grant, we will develop better hydrogel-integrated microfluidic platforms to examine cell-material interactions. Our focus will be the interplay between the stiffness and hydrogel adaptability for the control of cell behavior.

Congrats Oksana for being selected to deliver a talk in 7th Annual hDMT Meeting.

hDMT is a national consortium to excel organ on chip research in the Netherlands. Oksana will present us with her digital microfluidic platform study.

We got a Horizon Europe CoFund grant awarded!

In a team of researchers from Sabanci University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM), TUBITAK Marmara Research Center (TUBITAK-MAM), Koç University Research Center for Translational Medicine (KUTTAM) and Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG), we got a funding of 3,7 million Eur from Horizon Europe CoFund program. The topic is about developing "Nanobiotechnologies for Innovative Therapeutic Approaches for Cancer". The program focuses on cancer research while providing a tailor-made accelerator programme to educate tomorrow’s researchers in a broad set of scientific, transferable, and business skills to develop the mindset of an entrepreneur in parallel to the academic career. 

We are looking forward to collaborating with excellent researchers in the next 5 years!

Carina is on ICMS news!

Ana Carina Manjua fell in love with biomedical research during her master's at the New University of Lisbon, when studying electroconductive materials as biobatteries for pacemakers. During her PhD at the Instituto Superior Técnico in the same city, she worked on building a microchip to regenerate blood vessels. After that, she worked 1.5 years in a biomaterials company. Manjua returned to research last March as a EuroTech postdoc at the TU/e Biosensors and Devices Lab.
She will again work on microchips, this time in the context of cardiovascular diseases. The goal is to remodel cardiac tissue on a chip and recreate its micro-environment in order to simulate the disease and find ways to regenerate the tissue. Manjua’s research will include the microchip design, developing a hydrogel for electromagnetic stimulation to regenerate cells, building a stretchable platform – at the Swiss University EPFL – to simulate cardiac rhythm, and arranging a computational interface, before she can actually study the cardiac tissue.

BDL is a  Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS) affiliate & enjoy making science together. This year the annual event is hosted by all TU/e-based exciting speakers on 30-31 March 2023. Burcu co-chairs the first day of the event. Feel free to join us!

Paper alert! Our collaboration with Radboud UMC resulted in a Biosensors paper, just published. Congrats to all authors.

In the paper entitled "Co-culture of glomerular endothelial cells and podocytes in a custom-designed glomerulus-on-a-chip model improves the filtration barrier integrity and affects the glomerular cell phenotype", we build a functional microfluidic environment supported with perforated polycarbonate membrane to rebuild glomerulus units in the kidney. Lanhui and Burcu contributed to this work in the design and fabrication phases.

Ruth will work on developing light-responsive surface patterns, which will be integrated into a microfluidic platform to explore the cell-material response of macrophages. Ruth is a joint Ph.D. student of the Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Departments.

BDL exhibits at Dutch Design Week 2022 in collaboration with designer Piet Hein Eek.

 This year we collaborate with Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek to demonstrate atherosclerosis-on-chip.  Dutch Design week is held between 22-30 October 2022.

How does “design” change its meaning in functional (or a word that Piet prefers) and scientific perspectives?

Through our journey to bring different designers collaborating, we noticed that the word “design” can bear different meanings. Therefore, we share what we found out: Piet (PHE) and Burcu (Eindhoven University of Technology, Biomedical Engineering Department) joined forces to approach functional design from different perspectives. While Piet is good at designing macro-scale objects that find use in households, Burcu designs micro-scale objects for research purposes.  

For Piet, design is a word to create a functional product that he can foresee its use, while for Burcu design is a word to create a functional platform to explore the unforeseen, mostly for the understanding of medical problems.

Hereby, Piet and Burcu present a micron-scale construct made using the logo of Piet Hein Eek (PHE). This design mimics the branching veins in the body to study atherosclerosis, a health-related disorder resulting in clogged veins, which require the placement of stents. The logo of PHE appeared as an easy-to-fabricate and -operate design, therefore it was interesting to choose it to model the blood flow velocity in veins.

Through simulations, we found that the branching sides having a slower flow rate when compared to the main channels. Through experiments, real cells reacted to the flow by accumulating in low-flow-rate regions and migrating in high-flow rate regions. Our observation is in accordance with medical findings that regions with more cell accumulation were predicted to be more prone to atherosclerosis. Therefore, we can use this model to study the biology of this disease further and propose new treatment strategies!

Paper out! We publish a review paper on engineering organ-on-a-chip to accelerate translational research.

With our collaborator Prof. Noo Li Jeon at Seoul National University, we prepared an educational review paper on engineering organ-on-a-chip to accelerate translational research.  We provide an overview of what is organ-on-chip, where it can be used, what it is composed of, how it can be fabricated, and how it can be operated. We also revisited the recent applications, where different organs are modeled on the microscale using this technology.

We got an EuroTech2Postdoc application granted!

Carina will join our lab in February 2023 to work on high-throughput stimuli-responsive screening microchips for cardiac tissue remodeling in collaboration with our partners at EPFL and TU/e Biomedical Engineering.

Burcu gives a Keynote talk at the Netherlands Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering (NBTE) 30th Annual Meeting.

NBTE is a society that aims to promote the interests of biomaterials science and tissue engineering in the Netherlands and to stimulate cooperation between universities, institutions and industries in these domains. In 2022, NBTE is celebrating the 30st anniversary!
